Our Thoughts on TL;DV 

TL;DV’s free plan is best for people who need transcripts and videos. Most tools lock these features behind a paywall, and since transcripts are the single most important meeting note-taking feature, TL;DV had to be #1 since it’s in their free tier.

In our experience, the transcription quality was solid. It handled one-to-one calls very well. When speakers overlapped, transcriptions suffered, but that’s true for most cloud tools.

You’ll start to feel restricted on TL;DV once you need AI summaries and notes (which you’ll need for meeting insights). The credits there are limited, so if you’re relying on AI notes after every meeting, you’ll burn through them quickly.

It’s kind of annoying to have so little access to AI tools when they’re kind of the whole point of using an AI meeting notetaker, but what can you do? You aren’t paying!

TL;DV also severely limits your integrations. It offers 5000+ on paid plans, but the free plan has just 3 (Slack, email, and calendar).

Our Thoughts on Otter

Otter’s free plan is great for testing the waters of AI note-taking apps. It has high-quality live transcription, a decent number of AI features, and basic integrations included. If you don’t have many meetings, Otter’s free plan has everything you need. 

But we only recommend the free plan for light users. If you use it for more than 300 minutes per month, you’ll have to pay. That’s understandable. What really bothers us is the 30-minute meeting limit. We hate it when an app decides when the meeting’s over. It’s so annoying to see that little pop up in the corner.

Once you cross into daily meeting territory, the Pro plan (starting around $8.33 per month if billed annually) becomes almost inevitable. Unlike other tools like TL;DV or Plaud, you can’t use Otter at all if you’ve hit your 300-minute limit. No recordings. No transcripts. No meeting bot. Nothing.

Our Thoughts on Fathom

Fathom is a very generous AI assistant for individuals. You get unlimited recordings and transcripts on the free plan, which makes it great for freelancers, consultants, founders, and solo professionals running client calls. If you’re handling a few calls per week and mainly want clean summaries afterward, it works well.

But for teams, we didn’t like it. There’s no true team collaboration layer on the free plan, and that’s going to make life difficult if you want others to benefit from your transcripts, meeting notes, etc. So, if you’re trying to centralize notes across a company, it’s not ideal.

Advanced AI features, automation, and deeper workflows are also restricted. 

For low-volume, individual use? It’s perfectly fine. But if you’re planning to work with others on projects, you’ll need to upgrade eventually.

Tactiq made our list of the best free AI note-takers, but it’s the weakest option here, in our (expert) opinion. The features for teams are great, including advanced speaker and team analytics, dedicated team spaces, and CRM integration.

But they won’t mean much because Tactiq’s limits are so tight. You can barely use the tool before hitting a paywall.

Ten transcripts per month isn’t too bad if you only have a few meetings per week. But just 5 AI credits is a problem. You need to spend a credit to use any AI feature. Want a summary? That’s a credit. Want to ask a question to the conversational AI? That’s a credit. 

You’ll probably run out of credits after a single meeting. And without credits, you won’t be able to use ANY of Tactiq’s AI note-taking features.

The only Tactiq plan worth much is the Team plan, because it includes unlimited AI credits. The Free plan isn’t bad as a trial, though.

Here’s how to choose the right free note-taker for your needs:
